Instrumental Music

The Sapulpa Instrumental Music Department has five bands, over 350 students, and many other ensembles where our students can study instrumental music.  Students must begin their instrumental music education by studying in beginning band.

Beginning Band

Our beginning band meets during five classes.  Mr. Smith teaches beginning low brass, Mr. Amendt teaches beginning high brass, and Ms. Barnes teaches beginning flute, clarinet, and percussion.  A select group of students are chosen to switch to saxophone, oboe, French horn, euphonium, and tuba in the spring.  Students are encouraged to begin studying band in the 6th grade; however, they may begin their studies in the 7th grade.  This band performs at two concerts, has an opportunity to perform a solo, and perform as a band in one contest.

7th Grade Band

Our 7th grade students meet together in one band directed by Ms. Barnes, assisted by Mr. Smith.  These bands are available to students in their second year of band.  Students continue to work on the basic fundamentals of instrumental music.  There are more performance and competition opportunities for this group as compared to beginning band.  These bands perform at three concerts, three contests, has the opportunity to audition for NCDA honor band and has two opportunities to perform a solo for contest.

High School Band

Students at Sapulpa High School can participate in three different ensembles.

Sapulpa Chieftain Marching Band

The Sapulpa Chieftain Marching Band is our marching ensemble.  This performing ensemble performs at most high school football games, parades in the town of Sapulpa and competes in several contests including: OSSAA Regional Marching Competition, and the Oklahoma Bandmasters Association 6A Competition.

Sapulpa High School Concert Band

The high school concert band begins to rehearse at the conclusion of the competitive marching season.  This ensemble performs at three concerts, several assemblies, and also competes at the OSSAA concert band competitions.

Sapulpa Jazz Band

The high school jazz band is an auditioned group that rehearses at the beginning of the school year during a 7th flex hour.  The class is like any during the regular 6 period day; however, students will receive credit for taking the class.   The students audition for two jazz bands.  Students perform at select high school basketball games as well as several performances for area groups.  This group also competes at several jazz contests in the spring.
